Journal Mission

The Journal of Nutrition Research (JNR) is an independent American peer-reviewed open-access publication advancing evidence-based research at the intersection of nutritional science and digital health technology. Established in 2023, the journal provides a rigorous forum for original research, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and review articles examining the accuracy, utility, and clinical implications of digital dietary assessment tools.

Scope

JNR welcomes submissions addressing the following thematic areas:

  • Accuracy and validation of mobile calorie tracking and food tracker applications
  • AI and computer vision methods in dietary assessment and food recognition
  • Macronutrient and micronutrient tracking methodology and error characterization
  • Digital health interventions for weight management and dietary behavior change
  • Gut microbiome and nutritional biomarker research incorporating digital dietary data
  • Population-level dietary surveillance using mobile and wearable technologies
  • Clinical integration of nutrition tracking applications in dietetics practice
  • Ultra-processed food detection and NOVA classification via digital tools

Peer Review Process

All submitted manuscripts undergo double-blind peer review. Author and reviewer identities are concealed throughout the review process. A minimum of two independent expert reviewers evaluate each submission; a third reviewer is engaged in cases of substantive disagreement.

Median time from submission to first decision is 45 days. Accepted manuscripts are published online ahead of print within 14 days of final acceptance. The full review timeline, including revision rounds, averages 78 days from initial submission to final publication.

Reviewers are selected based on demonstrated expertise in the article's subject area as evidenced by recent publications. Editors and reviewers declare conflicts of interest prior to assignment. Manuscripts involving authors affiliated with the editorial board are handled by independent associate editors.

Article Types

  • Original Research: Reporting novel empirical findings from prospective or retrospective study designs. Maximum 6,000 words (excluding abstract, references, and figures).
  • Systematic Review: PRISMA-compliant reviews of existing literature addressing clearly defined research questions. Maximum 8,000 words.
  • Meta-Analysis: Quantitative synthesis of pooled data from multiple studies. Must include forest plots and heterogeneity statistics. Maximum 8,000 words.
  • Review Article: Narrative synthesis of current evidence on emerging topics. Invited and submitted. Maximum 6,000 words.

Publication Ethics

JNR adheres to the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines for editors, authors, and reviewers. All authors must confirm that the work has not been published elsewhere and is not under concurrent review. Data sharing is strongly encouraged; availability statements are required for all submitted manuscripts.

Statistical reporting must conform to the EQUATOR Network guidelines relevant to the study design (CONSORT for RCTs, PRISMA for systematic reviews, STROBE for observational studies).
